Cozy Game Review: Yonder

Updated: Feb 2, 2022

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles

As a thanksgiving treat I bought the video game Yonder on my Nintendo switch, and was NOT disappointed. Yonder is an open world game with a beautiful story. The game starts with a great selection of character customizations, and more become available throughout the game. There are many goals you can work towards adding to the gameplay. The basic storyline will take about 6 hours to complete but there are a plethora of side quests to add to your game time. This cozy game has no fighting but you are working against the darkness in the world adding some stakes to your adventure. The beautiful well developed world is only amplified by the artistic graphics. Although character design is slightly lacking in my opinion they more than make up for it with the creatures. The crafting system is on the go so a home base is not required though I would have enjoyed having a home to decorate in this world. Farming is considered your base in this game and although it's a great feature I don't think it fully makes up for the lack of housing. I was addicted to this game from the moment I bought it and I feel it finished too fast. The game is worth every penny and my main complaint is that there isn't any more of it!

Character customization: 8/10

Lots of options, just not the cutest in my mind, no wow.

Story line: 9/10

Easy to follow, puzzles, and a great ending. Missing some stakes.

World building: 10/10

Perfect! Easy to get around, different seasons and biomes, and a few added mysteries to discover!

Wildlife: 9/10

They put beautiful design and effort into their adorable creatures. There is a wildlife specialist who even tells you random facts about the animals. My only complaint is that there aren't any mounts.

MPC's: 5/10

This is the only area that I felt were completely average. Although there are a few characters you encounter repeatedly they aren't in any of the quests. I feel that they put the effort of building personality into the spirits you meet, though more information about why they are discovered in certain places would be nice, as well as more quests to unlock them.

Magic/Fighting: 8/10

There is no fighting in this game as I stated before but there is a magic system where you unlock spirits that get rid of the murk for you. Although these spirits are a great way to add some magic it would be nice to have a bit more depth in each of them rather than so many of them. There is also no customization in your abilities.

After the story: 8/10

After you complete the main story line there are hours of gameplay to still be had. You are able to farm and customize your character, there are also many side quests to keep you busy. If you're someone like me who enjoys unlocking all the lore there is to be had you will be playing forever. They killed it when it came to these magic discoveries. There is a world rating that you can try and max out as well.

Overall

I loved this game and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys casual cozy gaming. This is great for animal crossing lovers who enjoy crafting and farming. If you're a decorator it may have less appeal. The world is beautiful and there is much to discover if you have an adventurous spirit. This is the game for you.
